The Raiders got their leader in the middle in the first round in the form of Alabama Inside Linebacker Rolando McClain. Now we enter the 2nd round of the draft to see what other holes this team is looking to fill.
The only moves this team has made this season have been at linebacker. They added Kamerion Wimbley and Quentin Groves for their lower 3rd and low 5th round selections. Although it remains to be seen whether Groves will play defensive end or if the Raiders will be switching to the 3-4 in which both acquisitions will play the same hybrid roles they had with their previous teams.
Regardless of their roles, the Raiders have to start filling other needs besides linebacker. Those needs consist mainly along the lines. The lines need some major work and upgrading them would appear to be the highest priority at this point in the draft. Although there is always room for taking a “best player available” should that player have been worthy of a much higher pick.

Just as I did yesterday, I will be running this page as a Live Blog. I will constantly be updating it all day leading up to the draft as well as during the draft.

The first round had a flurry of trades that completely changed the landscape. There are plenty of first round quality prospects still available so it should be an exciting round as well. Hopefully the Raiders’ next pick is as solid as the first was.
–Our own Patrick Patterson has arrived back in Alameda and he says the feeling at Raider Headquarters is that today’s picks will also be “nuts and bolts” types of picks.
–Bills owner Ralph Wilson: The Broncos “Panicked” in trading up to take Tim Tebow.
–Tom Cable admitted in last nights post-draft press conference that he “coveted” Trent Williams or Russell Okung had been there at #8, the Raiders would have taken either of them. See the Cable press conference here (Thanks to Bret Armstrong for the find). This tells us that he may be thinking offensive tackle with the next pick. Hopefully one of the top remaining tackles will still be on the board when the Raiders select at pick 39.
–With the drafting of Rolando McClain, the buzz about Kirk Morrison being traded before the draft is over has gotten louder. Initially the thinking is he would go for a mid round selection but another option would be using him to move up in the 2nd round to get a guy the Raiders have their eye on so look for the possibility of that happening.
–On a side note; Joe Montana looks so gay in these Sketchers Shape-ups commercials.
–Jerry Jones just compared Dez Bryant to Bill Clinton. In regards to tardiness, not cigars… I assume.
–With as many first round quality players still on the board, the teams picking in the upper portion of the 2nd round have their phones ringing off the hook with trade offers. No doubt the Raiders are fielding calls. However unlikely it is that they trade down. It’s just not the Raider way in the top two rounds.
–Pre Bret Armstrong: Does anyone else think it is strange that the Oakland Raiders are choosing 8th overall in the first round and 7th overall in the second round? Here’s an even weirder one for you, they choose 5th in the third round, and then it is back to 8th for round four. What’s up with that?
Well, when the 2009 season ended, the Raiders, Seahawks, and Browns all ended the year with 5-11 records. Due to what we will refer to as the NFL “coin flip rule” the Raiders draft position will change in each round of the draft.
Weird, but it gives them a little advantage in some rounds, like the second and third rounds tonight.
3:00pm PT. The 2nd Round of the 2010 NFL Draft begins….
–The St Louis Rams are yet again, on the clock
–Patrick Patterson thinks the Rams will trade the pick. I think they will stand pat and draft WR Arrelious Benn out of Illinois. We’ll soon see.
–*PICK* With the 33rd overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the St Louis Rams select:

—Not the pick I thought but still great pick. I had him 2nd on the Raiders draft board. This means that USC’s Charles Brown is that last top flight OT left.
— Expect some trades now to get Brown for those teams that have yet to grab that oh so valuable offensive tackle they need. The Bills immediately come to mind. They draft right after the Raiders and know the Raiders have their sights set on drafting a tackle.
–Vikes are up next. I see them taking Jimmy Clausen. They traded down from the 30th pick knowing Clausen would still be available. Whether Favre comes back or not. Clausen can be groomed behind him.
–*PICK* With the 34th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings select:

–Crap, these teams are reading my draft board I think. The Raiders no doubt loved this guy. He is big and rangy and fast. He is in the mold of Asomugha so Al Davis no doubt really liked him.

–Chiefs get their own little Darren Sproles to combine with Jamaal Charles who they hope is their own LaDainian Tomlinson.
–Still a lot of great players out there like LB/DE Sergio Kindle, OT Charles Brown, DE Everson Griffen, and WR Arrelious Benn. And of course, QBs Colt McCoy and Jimmy Clausen. Expect those trades to start happening soon.
–*PICK* With the 37th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles select:
Nate Allen, S, South Florida
–The Eagles skip over the more highly touted Taylor Mays to grab Nate Allen to fill the safety spot vacated by Brian Dawkins last season.
–Mentioning Taylor Mays with the Raiders pick coming up in two picks will make many Raider fans extremely nervous. If the Raiders take him, it will be a HUGE mistake. Mainly because they have big needs elsewhere. But also because Mays is your stereotype Al Davis speedy workout warrior. But who knows, maybe the Browns will take him? Although I doubt it.
–*PICK* With the 38th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select:
TJ Ward, S, Oregon
–Wow, this is very high for Ward. I am an Oregon fan so I love the guy. But I am still extremely surprised at this pick.
–*TRADE* The Oakland Raiders trade the 39th overall selection to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
–So the Raiders act AGAIN out of character and trade down with the Bucs. I knew their phones were ringing but I just didn’t think they would take a deal.
–The deal moved the Raiders down three picks and they get an extra 5th rounder.
–*PICK* With the 39th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers select:

–This is an off-the-radar pick here. Especially with Texas’ Sergio Kindle, Clemson’s Ricky Sapp, and TCU’s Darryl Washington still on the board.

–Another reach here to an even further off-the-radar guy in Troup. But the Bills are known for making these type picks.
–Raiders are back on the clock. Mike Lombardi seems to think the Raiders are going to pick Bruce Campbell here. He is almost always wrong about the Raiders predictions he makes so I hope he is wrong about this one too. Unless it is Taylor Mays in which case, I will have wished it was Campbell afterall.
–*TRADE* The Oakland Raiders trade the 42nd overall selection to the New England Patriots.
–The Raiders now have the 44th overall selection. No word on compensation yet.
–*PICK* With the 42nd overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots select:

–Gronkowski becomes the second tight end taken off the board as expected.

–GREAT pick here. Kindle is a steal at this pick. They needed an outside linebacker something fierce. And they get their guy for sure.

–Another fantastic pick for the Raiders. No matter what they do now, this draft is a success. And they get Houston while trading down twice to get extra picks. Awesome. Even Kiper likes the pick. Sooprise, sooprise!

–As Patrick just pointed out, Houston had 22 tackles for loss and 8 sacks last season at Texas. Can you say “3-4 DE”? Perhaps

–So the Florida DE teammates go back to back. And the Bengals take yet another risky problem character prospect. But you can bet people will still revert to the Raiders being the team into criminals.

–*PICK* With the 55th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys select:

–*PICK* With the 56th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Green Bay Packers select:

–This is a pick that many Raider fans were hoping for to fill the gaps in the middle of the line. Even though the Raiders drafted DT Lamarr Houston earlier in the round, they may still try to get a big NT type of DT later in the draft.
–*PICK* With the 58th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans select:
Ben Tate, RB, Auburn
–Tate is a great back but this is a surprising pick here. He was projected in the later round. He goes before more highly touted backs like Georgia Tech’s Jonathan Dwyer, USC’s Joe McNight, and Tennessee’s Montario Hardesty.
–Hardesty is now the lone remaining back that would fit perfectly running between the tackles in the zone blocking scheme for the Raiders.
–*TRADE* The Philadelphia Eagles trade the 59th overall selection to the Cleveland Browns.
–*PICK* With the 59th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select:
Montario Hardesty, RB, Tennessee
–So much for Hardesty being still around for the Raiders. I shouldn’t have said anything.
–Everyone thought the Browns were going to take Colt McCoy here but the Browns are saying that after not being able to trade up to get Bradford with the first pick, they have no more intentions on drafting a QB this draft. I think after Holmgren spent the past few years in Seattle watching Jake Locker blossom, he will hold out to take him in next year’s draft. Just a hunch.
–Keep your eyes peeled for the Raiders to take RB James Starks out of Buffalo later in the draft.
–*PICK* With the 60th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select:
Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame
–Kiper really needs to get off Clausen’s nuts. He just gave him all the credit for Tate’s numbers. He just needs to let it go that Clausen was not the kind of blue chip prospect he claimed he was.
–Tate comes off the Raiders’ board while there still remains several offensive tackles available. Most notably, the top player I have on the board in USC OT Charles Brown followed by UMass OG Vladimir Ducasse and West Virginia OT Selvish Capers. Browns is the most dominant whilc Ducasse is a top guard prospect and Capers is the most athletic of the group which fits well into the ZBS. So we’ll see how it goes.

–Per Patrick Patterson: Lamarr Houston is saying the Raiders had no contact with him since the scouting combine. That just shows how much stock should be placed in pro day workout attendance and personal workouts. That’s a lot of plane tickets and fine dining for smoke screens.
–*PICK* With the 63rd overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts select:

–*PICK* With the 64th overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, the New Orleans Saints select:

–And for the final pick of the 2nd round, the Saints get the guy I had at the top of the Raiders’ board. That just leaves Selvish Capers and Abilene Christian’s Tony Washington that are still on the board at offensive tackle. Then there is always the former #8 overall pick OT Bruce Campbell too.

–Ok this HAS to be a guy they had their sights set on from the start. No wonder they kept trading down. This is a guy that ESPN’s Todd McShay had as his sleeper pick of the draft on the offensive line. Hard to find a lot of tape on him so I didn’t know where to place him in my draft predictions. I absolutely trust Tom Cable’s judgement on this one.

–As soon as I mention a possible trade, we have one. But it isn’t the Raiders trading up in the third round, it’s the Panthers.

–This is a guy who was at one point projected as a first round pick but fell due to poor workouts. He comes out of Penn State aka “Linebacker U” so he could be a great pick this low. Then again, he could be overrated which is the reason for his falling ala Quentin Moses.

–Ghee ran the fastest 40 yard dash at the combine which means that you know he had the eye of Al Davis. But now he will be a Bengal. What another Bengal pick that everyone would have assumed the Raiders take?
