The Oakland Raiders announced the release of four of the five players they need to jettison in order to get down to the league mandated 75 players by tomorrow.
They let go of Chane Moline, Paul Hubbard, Allen Smith, and Tony Stewart.
Chane Moline quickly fell behind Manase Tonga in the race for the second fullback situation. It was curtains for him when he was outplayed by converted (and later reconverted to) defensive end Alex Daniels.
Offensive lineman Allen Smith saw very few reps in camp and never really had a shot.
Paul Hubbard could not make it on to the field often enough to get noticed. He was far too often on the trainer’s table.
Veteran tight end Tony Stewart played in 15 games over three years in Silver and Black. He was in competition with John Owens and the recently acquired Eric Butler. His early release raises red flags in that he has been the player’s representative to the union, and Davis has been hostile to players who are too pro-union.
UPDATE: The final player cut to get the roster down to 75 was TE Eric Butler. Butler only spent 21 days as a member of the team.
