The Raiders have reportedly hired three new offensive coaches to complete their position coaching staff. While they may not be done hiring – they could always hire an offensive quality control coach, for example – the team’s offensive staff should be essentially in place at this time.
The move are unannounced by the Raiders so far and, thus, unofficial at this time but reportedly joining Del Rio’s staff are:
TE coach Bobby Johnson: Johnson comes to the Raiders by way of Detroit, where he was the assistant offensive line coach in 2014 and the tight ends coach in 2013. Before that, he was in Jacksonville in 2012, where he also coached tight ends, and was assistant offensive line coach with the Buffalo Bills from 2010-2011.
Johnson played left tackle at Miami (Ohio) for three seasons but did not turn professional. Instead he entered the college coaching ranks at the University of Akron with two seasons as a graduate student and then two more as the defensive line coach.
RB coach Bernie Parmalee: A former NFL running back for the Dolphins and the Jets, Parmalee comes to the Raiders after being out of coaching in the NFL or college ranks for the last few years. His last position in either was as the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight ends coach from 2010-2012.
Before that, Parmalee was the TE and Special Teams coach at Notre Dame (2005-2009) and the Miami Dolphins (2002-2004).
Parmalee continues the Raiders’ trend of hiring former NFL players as their position coaches. Jack Del Rio was, himself, an NFL linebacker so this makes sense.
WR coach Rob Moore: Like Parmalee, Moore is a former NFL player – a twelve year veteran of the Jets, Cardinals, and Broncos. Moore has worked his way up from coaching the Community College Phoenix Bears into the NFL and he was the WR coach for the Buffalo Bills last season under Doug Marrone.
A fun fact: Moore played for the Cardinals during the time that the movie Jerry Maguire was filmed and the jersey number he wore,#85, is the same as the one worn by fictional WR Rod Tidwell (played by Cuba Gooding Jr.). The movie used some game film in the final production and Moore is credited as playing himself in the movie along with the other athletes who appeared in the film.
