Trent Edwards’ agent Bruce Tollner has announced that his client has signed a contract with the Raiders. Edwards has long been destined to become a Raider and I even had him as the lone potential free agent QB the Raiders could sign. Another interesting fact is that Bruce Tollner is the son of former Raider passing game coordinator Ted Tollner.
Edwards signs a one year contract to back up Jason Campbell. He will compete with Kyle Boller for the number two quarterback position.
This is somewhat of a homecoming for Edwards as he played college ball at Stanford. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in round three of the 2007 draft — the same season the Raiders chose JaMarcus Russell number one overall. At the time, it was reported then head coach Lane Kiffin’s plan was to take wide receiver Calvin Johnson with the first pick and grab Edwards in round two.
Edwards earned the starting job in Buffalo rather quickly and played quite well his first two seasons. He eventually suffered back to back concussions, and while he was on the bench, Ryan Fitzpatrick played well enough to supplant him as the starter. The team released him early last season and he signed as a backup in Jacksonville.
He will be signing on to a similar deal in Oakland, just one year as a backup. He is a proven player who, if called upon, could lead the offense for the Raiders. At this point, that is confidence the team didn’t necessarily have in Kyle Boller.
