The Oakland Raiders signed a pigeon at halftime of yesterday’s 13-9 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The pigeon might start at cornerback opposite of All-Pro corner Nnamdi Osomugha, but only played on kickoff coverage yesterday against the Eagles.
The pigeon did not make any tackles, but according to the announcers, the pigeon’s containment skills were excellent, a reason Al Davis cited when signing the pigeon.
“I really think Pigeon will help our defense considerably,” coach Tom Cable said.
“He did a great job containing yesterday. He is one of the fastest guys in the league when he wants to be,” owner Al Davis added. “It doesn’t matter if he’s only a foot tall. This guy can cover anybody. If that City-by-the-Bay guy doesn’t work out, we’ll play him at wide receiver too. He’s one of those guys that can help you all over the field.”
Terms of the contract were not released because the pigeon cannot talk. Sources say that the pigeon was offered a loaf of bread per game, but the pigeon’s agent responded by saying that the pigeon “has a family to feed.”
Al Davis is currently working closely with Panera to hopefully reach an agreement with the pigeon by the end of the week. Other teams reported to be in the running for signing the pigeon were the Washington Redskins, St. Louis Rams, and Tennessee Titans.
Detroit4lyfe asked Martin Mayhew why the Lions didn’t sign the pigeon, to which Mayhew replied, “The pigeons in Green Bay aren’t at the same skill level as those in Philadelphia. I don’t know if it’s the cheese weighing them down or whatever, but they just aren’t on par with the Philly guys.”
