In a shocking bit of news, the Raiders have waived linebacker and special teams ace, Isaiah Ekejiuba. He broke the news via his twitter page. Here is what he had to say:
“Well Raider Nation, it was fun while it lasted. Sure you’ll be hearing soon enough I just got waived by the team. Thanx for all the support!”
“I really appreciate all the support on this. Keep yall posted on how everything plays out!”
This comes as quite a surprise to most fans. Ekejiuba was never a starter at the outside linebacker but he was a standout special teams player and was named a Pro Bowl alternate for his efforts after a stellar 08 season in which he contributed to the Raiders having some of the best special teams play in the league.
Teammate Michael Huff was taken off guard as well responding “This has to be an April Fools joke.”
Ekejiuba’s roster spot was put in jeopardy with the offseason additions of Kamerion Wimbley and Quentin Groves. Although most thought he would continue to offer solid depth as well as his gunner duties on kick returns.
He spent five seasons with the Raiders after going undrafted out of Virginia.
I remarked during mini camps that I have rarely seen anyone look like they were having as much fun as he does in practice. He will be missed.
I wouldn’t be surprised if he was swiped up rather quickly off the waiver wire. But if he isn’t, I also wouldn’t be surprised to see him re-signed by the Raiders during training camp. We might not have seen the end of Isaiah Ekejiuba in Silver and Black.
