As I reported earlier, Richard Seymour was not at the Raiders early mini camp day one practice. This is due to the fact that he hasn’t signed his one-year franchise tag.
Well, according to head coach Tom Cable, the Raiders are currently actively working on signing Richard Seymour to a long-term deal.
Seymour was acquired in a trade with the New England Patriots just prior to the start of last season in a move that surprised him because he thought the Patriots were working on signing him long-term. As it turned out he had to uproot his family just days before the start of the season.
Even with the short turnover, the 320 pound defensive end came in and started in game one against the Chargers and dominated. He looked like he didn’t miss a beat. This was no doubt partially attributed to the Chargers not having time to prepare for Seymour being in the lineup. But still, his 2 sack performance to go along with his multiple pressures and run stuffs was extremely impressive.
He would have a solid season with the Raiders and at season’s end he would become a free agent unless the Raiders either placed the franchise tag on him or signed a long-term deal.
There was no way the Raiders were going to allow him to be a free agent just one season after they sent a 2011 first round pick to the Pats in exchange for him. The franchise tag seemed unlikely as well because of the extreme amount of guaranteed money it had attached to it. A long term deal seemed imminent and now it apparently will be coming very soon. Hopefully within enough time for him to get into this weekend’s mini camps.
