A rainy July day from Gillette Stadium did not stop countless Patriots fans from attending Patriots Training Camp as the regular season looms closer and closer and the roster spots are diminishing very soon till it hits 53 guys.
As I attended the Sunday July 31st training camp session, I noticed how precise the quarterbacks were throwing the ball even in the rainy, windy conditions. Brady was zipping the ball like it was nothing as 10,000+ fans were yelling, BRADY! BRADY! through training camp whenever Brady approached the bleacher section of the Dana Farber practice field. His throws were clean and he looked better than ever even at 38 years old (Brady turns 39 this Wednesday). Along with Brady, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo was looking sharp although a few miscues early led to consistent throws and smart play calls later on. Third stringer QB Jacoby Brissett was also performing consistently as he is learning from the best around in Brady and is in a good position in case of something happens, he is prepared to take over.
Undrafted DB V’Angelo Bentley out of Illinois, has a combination of unique skill sets that led to him catching punts in today’s camp with wearing #9. Bentley is twitchy and has the ability to juke out guys and accelerate quickly. Speaking of quickness, 2nd round pick out of Alabama Cyrus Jones was consistent with catching punts from Ryan Allen and with the slipperiness of the football, maintained composure and could be the primary punt returner to help take the workload off Amendola.
The tight ends especially had a phenomenal performance out on the fields as they pumped up the crowd with jaw dropping catches and funny moments (Gronk). Gronkowski and Bennett both had nice catches at the back of the end zone and they proceeded to throw the ball in the air and run around trying to hype up teammates and just in a way, release the inner Rob Gronkowski.
Day 5, which will be tomorrow for season ticket holders only (Kevin Faulk HOF Induction) won’t be as crowded as usual but nonetheless, every practice matters and the Patriots have unique talent on this roster.
