Ramon Sessions Agrees to 2-year, $4.2 million deal with Kings

The journeyman point guard will challenge Darren Collison for minutes.

The Sacramento Kings and point guard Ramon Sessions have agreed to a two-year, $4.2 million deal, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Sessions spent last season playing for Charlotte and Milwaukee, averaging 12.3 points and 4.1 assists, shooting 43 percent from the field and 28 percent from 3. Although considered an average outside shooter, Sessions excels at attacking the hoop and drawing fouls.

For the Kings, Sessions is a shrewd signing. $4.2 million over two seasons is great value for one of the better backup point guards in the league, and while it is unlikely he would take Darren Collison’s starting role, he has proven he can contribute in a starting role. Should Collison get injured, Sessions certainly would be up to the task.

This deal does create uncertainty regarding the future role of Ray McCallum. While McCallum saw plenty of action last season, minutes will be harder to come by now that he is the third point guard on the roster. Sessions could be placed at the off-guard position, as was the case at times in Charlotte last season, but his poor 3-point shooting will likely dissuade head coach Mike Malone from going that route, particularly with Nik Stauskas and Ben McLemore on the roster.

Despite Sessions’ poor outside shooting, he is a good addition for the Kings. He’s a solid contributor on the court and should serve as a great locker room presence, as well. Off the bench, he could be one of the better sixth men in the league.
