<![CDATA[Free agency kicks off at 12:01 AM March 9th and that means there will be several late night phone calls and GM's making it rain like they're Jordan Belfort on a bender. For the Rams, since they have more holes than season one of Westworld and little to fill them with it means really examining who’s on the market and who comes with the least amount of risk.
Pierre Garcon is looked at as a viable option to resuscitate their graveyard of a receiving corps and he shouldn’t cost as much as his more marquee counterparts. If they do land Garcon and there is some money left over it would be wise of the Rams to invest in some veteran help along their offensive line. Goff needs all the help he can get because he’s taken more hits than John Wick.
Greg Robinson isn’t the answer at left tackle and may best be served being moved to guard because at the very least his penalties will be less visible when he’s on the interior of the line. There are a few viable options on the market this year and the best one is Russell Okung.
Report: Los Angeles Rams player arrested Sunday Night
Okung was released last week by the Denver Broncos after just one season and while he isn’t the second coming of Orlando Pace, he might just be what the Rams need. Prior to being on the Broncos, Okung spent the first six years of his career with the Seattle Seahawks including their two Super Bowl seasons (winning one of course) and while injuries started to build, he was responsible for protecting Wilson’s blind side.
His season in Denver wasn’t stellar but his release wasn’t due to injury or performance, Elway was simply being frugal. Okung would give the Rams a grown up along the line which is sorely needed because as discussed in a previous article, the Rams line is extremely young. It would also allow them to move Greg Robinson elsewhere and asses whether or not his option is worth picking up next year if he’s a guard because it certainly isn’t as a tackle.
The Rams will face some stiff competition for Okung as Carolina is said to be very interested in him as well and Seattle might want to bring him back given the dire state of their line. He could also just end up back in Denver once Elway realizes that his options beyond Okung are threadbare at best. There are no easy answers this off-season and Okung’s injury history is a cause for concern but the same could be said of Ryan Clady or Matt Khalil.
If the Rams are able to sign Russell Okung, life would become easier for Goff and Todd Gurley and even if he can’t perform its likely his contract will mirror the deal he had in Denver which was largely incentive based so it wouldn’t be the end of the world.
The good teams are the ones who can win the battle in the trenches and if the Rams wish to be a good team then investing in Okung is a good place to start.
