In a move that was both expected and a massive relief, the Rams have reached an agreement with kicker Greg Zuerlein. Zuerlein signed a three year deal and this means that along with Johnny Hekker the Rams have the best one-two punch in their kicking game. That might seem laughable or a minor victory but it solidifies their special teams unit which was the lone bright spot of the team last season. There was some concern about Zuerlein coming back to the team after he had a dismal 2015 season where he only made 66.7% of his field goals but the odds of that regression continuing were slim.
Last season he earned his keep by making 86.4% of his kicks and he was responsible for the majority of the Rams’ scoring drives. This put him 10th in the league among kickers which is not nothing considering how some teams have to cycle through kickers during the year. What probably helped his case besides his percentage going back up was the fact that when asked he could still hit it from beyond 50 yards and given that he’s only 29 that isn’t likely to end soon. Quality kickers are hard to come by in the NFL luckily the Rams recognized that a guy like Greg Zuerlein doesn’t just come in off the streets everyday.
