Random Thoughts: Whitner to the Redskins?...Sir Charles tells it how it is...Don't be surprised if Kyle Williams is your starting NT for 2010

Donte Whitner’s days in Buffalo may be coming to an end. According to Buffalo Sports Daily, there’s a rumor going around a Washington Redskins fan website that Donte Whitner will be landing in our Nation’s Capitol by March 5th. Details about what the Bills could get in return for Whitner weren’t discussed. Of course, this is just a rumor, but it shouldn’t surprise any Bills fans if they decide to give Whitner the boot. Whitner is a free agent after next year and there’s already a log jam of decent safeties on the Bills roster.

Plus, Whitner has always seemed to be lagging in pass coverage skill and has never lived up to his 9th overall draft status. I’ll be frank, as much as I’ve picked on Whitner for not getting interceptions or ever seeing him really make an impact on the field, I’ll be a little saddened if he ends up leaving. You can tell that the guy really cares about trying to get the Bills out of the cellar that they have been inhabiting for over the last 10 years. When I read that Donte Whitner was crying in his locker room after the Bills opening night lost against the Patriots, I couldn’t help but feel bad for the poor guy.

Unfortunately, he’s becoming expendable and it’s important for the Bills to get some sort value for him. Now, if the Bills get something like 4th rounder, I’ll vomit and declare that the team is on the brink of cutting expenses to clear a move to Toronto or LA. I think he’s worth a second rounder or a decent player in return.

So much for Terrell Owens making the Bills “relevant” again. In case you missed it, NBA analyst Charles Barkley took a shot at Terrell Owens and the Bills during the NBA All-Star skills competition in Dallas.

Owens was in attendance for the event on Saturday night (Which happened to have the worst slam dunk contest in the history of mankind). When shown in the crowd on TNT, Barkley commented, “Man I didn’t know T.O. was still alive.” When asked by another analyst why, Barkley followed, “Man nobody watches the Buffalo Bills play, give me a break. You think they ever showed the Buffalo Bills?” When told that the Bills where shown early in the season when Owens first started, Barkley joked, “how did that turn out!”

As usual, a television station in Buffalo decided to take the comments a step further (Cough: WGRZ)by asking the readers or viewers to do the following:

If you don’t agree with Barkley comments, email Channel 2 and we’ll forward your thoughts onto TNT and Charles.

First off, I don’t live in Buffalo anymore, but I’m well aware of the reputation that “the red coats” of WGRZ have endured by asking tough questions to congressmen and scam artists. However, do you really think that the station should take affirmative action against Charles Barkley for merely telling the truth about the Buffalo Bills franchise?

Should we send emails to ESPN analysts for saying “the Bills are the Raiders of the east?” Should we e-mail Al Roker for saying “it’s another cold day in Buffalo, but their use to snow?” Sorry, but go ask tough questions like why NYS taxes are so high and why does your local news consist of three minute sportscasts that have absolutely no opinion or astute observations about the Bills or Sabres.

Also, do you honestly think that Charles Barkley is going to give a crap about an NBC affiliate in Buffalo sending him complaints from Bills fans? That dude has been at war with the press and fans since I was a kid. The guy had the single greatest quote in history when he threw a guy out of a window at a night club and said, “My biggest regret was not throwing him out of a higher window.” Trust me, he not only won’t apologize for it, but he’ll just decide to turn up the heat and crap on the city.

Secondly, I understand that a lot of Buffalo fans get very upset when someone doesn’t enjoy the finer things in life that the city has to offer. However, to get upset about a comment from a basketball hall of famer for dissing your football team is just screaming for you to get over not being the most popular kid in high school.

You know how many times pundits have called out the city of New York, Boston and Philadelphia? I can firmly tell you that those cities wouldn’t give a rats ass if anyone called them out, because they feel just fine about themselves. In other words, when you have to look for approval from the outside world for loving your city, then you surly need to go see a shrink and get rid of your low self-esteem issues.

I know a lot of fans are counting on the Bills trying to find a huge nose tackle in the free agent market. However, if there’s one thing that I have learned about the Bills over the last ten years, it’s how they love trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Anyone who thinks the Bills are going to go out and pay Casey Hampton doesn’t understand the way the Bills do business.
The team has already given long term deals to Marcus Stroud, Aaron Schobel (whose doing his best Bret Favre), Chris Kelsay and Kyle Williams on the defensive line. Besides the money factor, we are talking about an organization that believes in doing everything the unconventional way when it comes to finding their players. This is the same organization that decided to start 3 offensive lineman that had never played an NFL down. This is the same organization who decided to move it’s right tackle to left tackle and its right guard to right tackle, only to cut the starting right tackle two weeks before the start of the regular season. They also canned their offensive coordinator 10 days before the season opener.

Even though everyone who has watched an NFL game is saying that Williams shouldn’t play NT in a 3-4 defense, the unconventional wisdom of the Buffalo Bills brain trust, tells me not to be surprised if Williams is your starting undersized nose tackle for the 2010 NFL season. If you don’t think the Bills are contemplating having Williams as their NT, just ask Chan Gailey?

Don’t think that the guy that plays nose has to be a 330 or 340 pound guy,” said Gailey. ”We’re not going to take good football players and stand them over there beside me on game day. We’re going to put our best players on the field. If you have to put a smaller guy on the field to play there then you move him and do some different things with him. There are a lot of different ways to skin the cat and that’s what we’ll do. We’ll get our best football player on the field and let them play.” -Chan Gailey on 103.3 The Edge-

Like I said, square peg in round a hole.
