Update, 2:36 p.m.:
To make room for Woywitka, Stu Bickel has been assigned to the CT Whale.
Larry Brooks at the New York Post adds that according to NHL rules, Bickel must return to North America immediately. Will fly back tomorrow.
…no surprise here as I doubt the Rangers would have sent Exixon back again (man that would have been cruel) and Bell far outplayed Bickel this preseason.
Original Post:
Andrew Gross at Ranger Rants reports the Rangers have claimed defenseman Jeff Woywitka, 28, off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens.
Woywitka, who is a former teammate of Brad Richards in Dallas, is on his way to Stockholm to join up with the team but is not expected to be in the lineup this weekend.
The 6-foot-3, 227-pound Woywitka had two goals and nine assists in 63 games for the Stars last season and his best numbers came when he compiled three goals and 15 assists in 65 games for the Blues in 2008-09.
He has a salary cap hit of $650,000.
…don’t know much about this guy but the feedback I’m getting from readers is very positive so far.
…so much for the return of Paul Mara.
…just hoping Wowitka is here for insurance. Would hate to see him take ice time away from Erixon or Del Zotto unless completely necessary.
