Update, 12:08 a.m.:
Wayne Fish at Phillyburbs.com says a National Hockey League source confirmed Thursday night that the Flyers will host the Rangers in the 5th Winter Classic Game on Jan. 2, 2012 at Citizens Bank Ballpark.
Original Post:
Darren Dreger reports that sources confirm to him that Philadelphia is the leading candidate for next year’s Winter Classic and the Rangers are the likely opponent.
Dreger adds that the NHL hasn’t officially signed off on the location, largely because of building availability in Philadelphia. The NHL would love to host the outdoor game at Lincoln Financial Field, but the NFL’s schedule is making the football stadium virtually impossible, so Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies, will likely be the venue of choice.
Last month Jim Matheson said a Rangers/Flyers Winter Classic would most likely be played on January 2nd because January 1st is a Sunday and the NHL won’t want to compete with the NHL.
…Rangers/Flyers has been the on-going rumor for sometime, but now that Dreger is reporting it you’ve got to assume this is virtually a lock.
…wonder if tickets will be available for Rangers season ticket holders. I was going to cancel this year, but I might have to re-think if that’s the case.
