Larry Brooks at the New York Post reports that the Rangers are discussing the possibility of placing Sean Avery on re-entry waivers at noon Saturday, the deadline for doing so, in order for him to play again in the NHL this season.
If Avery is claimed on re-entry, the Rangers would be hit with a $209,460 salary cap charge for the remainder of the season. If Avery were to go unclaimed, the Rangers would simply put him back on waivers and re-assign him to the AHL Whale after he clears.
Nick Kypreos at Sportsnet says the Flames had interest in Avery a month ago, but the Rangers were reluctant to place him on re-entry waivers. He wonders if the Blueshirts are having a change of heart now.
…would love to see Avery get out of the hell that is the CT Whale. What happened to him down there and with the organization has been criminal, but I’ll give credit to Sather for doing the right thing here.
…good luck to Avery wherever he lands as long as it’s not with an Eastern Conference team.
