Exactly one hundred days after getting claimed off waivers by the Brewers, Cody Ransom is back with his old team, the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Brewers must have put Ransom on waivers at some point in the last few days, and he was claimed by Arizona, who needed some infield depth after the trade of Stephen Drew. The Brewers didn’t get anything in return.
When Ransom first became a Brewer, there was some hope that he’d hit well enough to start ahead of Cesar Izturis at shortstop, but, though his offensive numbers did end up a little better than those of Izturis, Ransom never really made enough contact to distinguish himself – a .638 OPS isn’t horrible, but that fact is often lost on observers when it’s accompanied by a .196 batting average. As a result, Ransom slowly went from being a potentially useful cog to that one guy who was annoying because he struck out a lot off the bench.
The Brewers didn’t have an immediate plan to replace Ransom’s roster spot, so they were one player short for the duration of last night’s tilt against the Pirates. After the game, they recalled infielder Eric Farris from Nashville. The 26-year old Farris hit .286/.329/.377 in Nashville this year while seeing time at second base, shortstop, and both outfield corners. Farris doesn’t bring enough offense to the table to profile as a regular, and isn’t really suited for the left side of the infield, so his best chance to stick in the majors might be as a Joe Inglett/Willie Bloomquist superutility type. However, the Brewers don’t have a pressing need for one of those guys, and there’s no reason to think he’ll be anything more than an insurance policy for them.
After calling up Farris, the Brewers have three spots open spots on their 40-man roster, but, according to Adam McCalvy, it sounds like they will wait until Nashville’s last game on Monday before making any September call-ups. There are quite a few players that might be candidates for one reason or another, but I plan on looking at that more tomorrow, and the Brewers haven’t tipped their hand as to what they’ll do.
