Rare Mickey Mantle Card Stolen

And this is why we can't have nice things.

It's one of the most well known pieces in the history of baseball card collecting…the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle.  And during the National Sports Collectors Convention this past weekend, one dealer's prized piece sprouted legs and walked.

According to Dan Good, contributing editor over at Beckett Media, Indianapolis-based dealer Jeff Foy, believes a group of three people were likely involved…with two people distracting employees while the third person swiped the card from his booth.  Foy bought the PSA 4 graded Mantle rookie earlier this year.  Similar cards in that condition have recently sold online for $8000.

“It’s so frustrating,” he said. “You think people are honest and decent and 99 percent are. All it takes is that one person to change that.”

Now, as cool as the iconic card is, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggests that it wasn't even the coolest Mantle item for sale at the annual convention.  My two favorite pieces came from Legendary Auctions.

First up…this watch.

The wristwatch was given to the New York Yankees legend by Look magazine following his superb 1961 season.  The slugger's name is engraved on the backside and, according to the auction house...it still works.

Next…this gem.

They say this batting helmet is the same one Mantle wore when he belted that game-winning home run during Game Three of the 1964 World Series.  Why do I like it?  Just look at that wicked stencil job.

Pretty badass, huh?
