Following their loss to the Dallas Stars in Kansas City, the St. Louis Blues announced they had trimmed their roster down to 33. The five players sent down to the AHL were Ty Rattie, Jordan Binnington, John McCarthy, Brent Regner and Philip McRae. The Blues currently have 33 players left at the NHL level, including newly-signed Jaden Schwartz.
Couple of things worth pointing out here.
There’s really no surprise that Binnington is on his way to the Chicago Wolves considering the Blues are just a handful of preseason games away from the regular season and Brian Elliott and Jake Allen will need to shake off the rest of their rust.
Rattie, the skater usually referred to as the team’s best prospect, was sent down before 2014 Draft pick Robby Fabbri. It may not mean much, but it draws the conclusion that Fabbri is closer to making the NHL squad than Rattie. Maybe the team just wants to get a closer look since they have less information on Fabbri than Rattie, but it’s still kind of interesting.
Barring a huge surprise, Fabbri will eventually be sent down, but for now the Blues want to take a longer look at the new prospect.
