With a chance to help a fellow Original Sixer, the Detroit Red Wings fell flat last night and lost 3-0 to the Carolina Hurricanes. This means the Hurricanes are now just two points behind the Rangers for the eighth and final playoff spot with just two games remaining in the NHL season. The Rangers magic number to clinch remains at three.
The Rangers final two games are at home against the Thrashers (Thurs) and Devils (Sat.), while the Canes play at the Thrashers (Fri) and home vs. the Lightning (Sat.).
The 6th place Canadiens play Thursday at Ottawa and Saturday at Toronto and the 7th place Sabres play Friday vs. Flyers and Saturday at Columbus
If Carolina loses one of their last two games in regulation the Rangers will need to just take one of the last two games at least into overtime to clinch a playoff berth.
In case of a tie, the first tie-breaker is regulation wins which the Rangers and Canes both have 34. The second tie-breaker is head-to-head which Carolina won.
…i’m not sure if I’ll be able to take the season coming down to the final game again. Especially against the Devils who Lemaire will have fired up to keep the Blueshirts out of the playoffs.
