The MLB offseason is in full swing and teams are already beginning to set up plans for improving their teams. Lets recap all the moves that have happened from the end of the World Series to the end of the GM meetings for the American League.
AL East
Boston Red Sox:
- The Red Sox re-signed RP Koji Uehara to a two-year, $18 million deal. The move keeps the 39 year old, who has had tremendous success in Boston, around for two more years, and keeps their closer from bolting to a more lucrative deal.
Toronto Blue Jays:
- The Blue Jays traded 1B Adam Lind to the Milwaukee Brewers for RHP Marco Estrada on Nov. 1. The trade makes sense for both teams, as the Brewers needed a 1B and the Blue Jays needed stronger starting pitching.
- The Blue Jays traded OF Anthony Gose to the Detroit Tigers for 2B prospect Devon Travis on Nov 12. The Blue Jays cleared out a fairly crowded outfield and picked up an excellent prospect in Travis. In return, the Tigers could use Gose in a platoon role with Rajai Davis and get much stronger defensively.
New York Yankees:
- The Yankees re-signed OF Chris Young to a one-year, $2.5 million contract on Nov. 8. The deal is a highly incentive laden and Young could earn over $6 million if he reaches all the markers.
- The Yankees traded C Francisco Cervelli to the Pittsburgh Pirates for RP Justin Wilson. The move could likely mean the Yankees wont re sign David Robertson and could move Dellin Betances to the closer role. The Pirates also get excellent depth at catcher should Russell Martin leave in free agency.
Tampa Bay Rays:
- The Rays traded RP Cesar Ramos to the Los Angeles Angels for RHP prospect Mark Sappington. The move gives Los Angeles relief pitching depth and likely means they wont re sign Jason Grilli. For the Rays, it gives them a former top prospect who struggled but could be a low risk, high reward kind of player for their minor league system.
- The Rays traded RHP Jeremy Hellickson to the Arizona Diamondbacks for OF prospect Justin Williams and SS prospect Andrew Velasquez. The deal helps the Diamondbacks address a need for starting pitching while the new GM in Tampa begins to develop his plan for the future.
AL Central
Detroit Tigers:
- The Tigers re signed DH Victor Martinez to a four-year, $68 million deal on November 14th. As one of the top hitters available in free agency, the Tigers made it a point to re sign him, even with Max Scherzer and Torii Hunter in free agency. The move likely means Martinez retires with the Tigers, who are his third team.
AL West
Los Angeles Angels:
- The Angels traded C Hank Conger to the Houston Astros for C prospect Carlos Perez and RHP prospect Nick Tropeano on Nov. 5. The move gives the Astros better catching depth while the Angels make off with an almost MLB ready catcher and solid pitching prospect.
- The Angels avoided arbitration with RP Vinnie Pestano and signed him to a one-year, $1.15 million deal.
