NL East

Miami Marlins:

  • The Marlins extended OF Giancarlo Stanton to a record 13-year, $325 million deal. The move keeps the star outfielder in Miami long term. While there is an opt out option for him after his sixth year, the move assures the fans that this team wants to compete for a long time.
  • The Marlins acquired RP Aaron Crow from the Royals for LHP Brian Flynn and RP Reid Redman (AA – Jacksonville). The Marlins view Crow as a possible starter to give some back end rotation depth but as a worst case scenario, he can provide bullpen depth. The Royals get a couple of younger prospects including the massive, 6’7” Flynn.

NL Central

St. Louis Cardinals:

  • The Cardinals acquired OF Jason Heyward and RP Jordan Walden for RHP Shelby Miller and RHP Tyrell Jenkins (High A – Palm Beach). The move addresses the unfortunate need for an outfielder after the tragic death of Oscar Tavares. It also brings in Walden who is a solid reliever with longer team control left. The Braves get younger and really upgrade their rotation with established started Shelby Miller. Tyrell Jenkins was also one of the more highly rated prospects in the Cardinals organization.

NL West

Los Angeles Dodgers:

  • The Dodgers acquired RP Joel Peralta and RP Adam Liberatore (AAA – Durham) from the Rays for RP Jose Dominguez and RP Greg Harris (A – Great Lakes). The move gives the Dodgers a nice addition to their bullpen and reunites Peralta with Andrew Friedman who left the Rays to become the President of Baseball Operations in Los Angeles.
  • The Dodgers acquired RHP Juan Nicasio from the Rockies for a player to be named later or cash. Nicasio had some success in and out of the rotation in the hitter friendly Coors Field, but was designated for assignment. The Dodgers could use the depth he provides. The Rockies were able to clear roster space to save some prospects from the Rule 5 draft.

Arizona Diamondbacks:

  • The Diamondbacks signed Cuban OF Yasmany Tomas to a six-year, $68.5 million deal. The move is a bold one for new GM Dave Stewart but could give the middle of the order some serious pop (along with Paul Goldschmidt and Mark Trumbo). If the results match the talent, the Diamondbacks could get serious value from Tomas and newly acquired Jeremy Hellickson.
