NOTE – word has it Dontrell Moore is healthy and will start tonight vs. Utah, so I’ve changed my pick in that game – NM 24, Utah 23.
Since we are in the bye week, thought I’d put a little info out there regarding recruiting.
Jonathon Stewart – Man among boys is the way I heard him described by someone that watched him a week ago. I haven’t seen much of him, other than some highlights on TV that make you go “geez”, but then I saw this:
Some things to love about this kid:
1) 5-10, 225, and certainly passes the “eye” test! Physical stats: bench presses 350 pounds, squats 575, vertical jump of 37-inches, runs a 4.5. Oh, and he’s got a 3.2 GPA and already has a qualifying SAT score, but he plans to retake this fall.
2) He’s the #1 rated running back in America, he’s got a top-9 list of schools, including Florida, Tennessee, Arizona schools, Cal, Oregon, UW, and WSU.
3) The stats are unbelievable. The all-time leading career yardage leader, already, and will probably break the mark by at least 1,000 yards by the time this season is over.
4) He took an “unofficial” visit a couple of weeks ago for the Idaho game, and has will set an official visit later this year.
4) One of his best friends in the world is WSU verbal RB/DB Shelton Danzy, and the “inside” word is he’s pushing WSU hard. Danzy, meanwhile, is an all-everything player for Rainier Beach, and was voted defensive MVP at the WSU summer camp. Physical stats are impressive – 5-10, 190, runs a 4.5, benches 280, squats 460(!), and has a 34-inch vert! He’s an honor roll student to boot. Nice to have a kid like that, regarded as one of the best players in the state, already in the WSU fold and spreading the WSU gospel! For more on Danzy, check it out:
Shelton’s own web site
5) Stewart attended the WSU camp this summer, in a pretty big surprise to many.
We may not land him in the end, but you have to love our chances. What does that say about the state of our program, where a national kid like this has us in his final choices? Where a kid of this magnitude attends WSU’s camp!?!? If Drew Bledsoe is regarded as the #1 recruit in WSU history, AND we do land him, this guy is #1A.
Look at the verbals WSU now has, in a very small class of I believe 13 scholies available this year:
1) Arkelon Hall, QB, Fresno – rated as the #8 QB in the nation, was a standout at the EA Sports ELITE 11 QB camp. Recruiters are still hammering him, but he re-affirmed his commit to WSU after the camp by donning a WSU hat and WSU workout shirt, and when asked about his commitment, boldly said “Do you see the hat? Do you see the shirt? Of course I’m going to WSU!” Was named Junior player of the year in California last year, threw for 34 TD’s and only 5 picks! Picked the Cougs over Utah, Cal, Oregon and Oregon State.
2) Danzy, which I’ve talked about already, rated as the #7 overall prospect in the staterate, in the top 20 CB’s in the nation. He picked the Cougs over Oregon, Oregon State, Cal, Fresno State, and Boise State among many.
3) Brandon Gibson, a 6-0, 180 LB, runs a 4.5. An “athlete” that was an absolute stud at the Oregon/Nike camp and committed to WSU over the summer. Many project him as a potential star at safety. Rated as the #10 overall prospect in the entire state of WA, the #34 rated overall prospect in America at the “athlete” position.
4) Kenny Alfred – 6-3, 285 lb D-tackle from Gig Harbor. He’s supposedly got great feet, very quick and runs a consistent 4.9. He just made news last night by announcing his verbal commitment to WSU. Rated as the #8 ranked overall recruit in the state of Washington, and ranked 40th in the nation at d-tackle. Chose the Cougs over UW, Oregon State, and Northwestern. Considered a big “get” and many say 5 years ago, he would have been a Husky from day one.
