Recruiting Notes: Lasch Bash and More

This weekend, James Franklin and Staff will host a slew of top prospects for the program’s annual Summer cookout, Lasch Bash. This will be an important event for the staff as they haven’t netted a commitment since late April and have seen many top targets go off the board in the meantime. Lets get to the storylines.

Who Will Be There?

All of the 2017 class is expected to be on hand, that includes 4 star QB Sean Clifford, 4 star LB Dylan Rivers, 4 star OG C.J. Thrope, 4 star Yetur Matos, 3 star DE Damion Barber, 3 star CB D.J. Brown, 3 star OL Mike Miranda, and 3 star OL Robert Martin.

Penn State’s top target, 4 star Lamont Wade, is expected to attend which is big news as Franklin works to build on his momentum with the in state cornerback. Two 3 star WRs, Cameron Sullivan- Brown and Mac Hippenhammer will both be there. It is very likely one of these two commits. Virgina linebacker Braylin Franklin will attend as he nears a decsion. The state of West Virginia will be represented by athlete Derrek Pitts and two brothers Darius(2017) and Dante(2018) Stills, both are defensive linemen still looking for Penn State offers. 3 star Michigan saftey Scott Nelson is expected on campus as well. Olalere Oladipo, a defensive end from Illinois  will be on campus.

Both of Penn State’s 2018 commits Micah Parsons and Chris Bleich are slated to be there this weekend. They will be accompanied by an impressive group of prospects that includes the #1 running back in the 2018 class Ricky Slade and in state 4 star WR Saquon Anderson-Butts.  Athlete Charlie Katshir is expected to attend. Elite DB prospect Isheem Young, formally of Philadelphia now plays at IMG,visited Thursday, not expected to stay through the weekend.

Sutherland Emerges

Many Penn State fans do not know about Jonathan Sutherland, but Penn State has emerged as the favorite as he will commit on July  23rd. Sutherland is a 2017 prospect and plays at Episcopal Academyin in Virgina, but he is actually from Ottawa, Canada. The defensive back will be at Lasch Bash and it will be his last visit before his commitment. According to 247 Sports, Penn State has now become the favorite to land his services. We will of course keep you updated on this one.

Making the Cut

Penn State recently made the top 10 for defesnive tackle Juan Harris. The 3 star comes in at 6’4 368 and holds 38 offers. Another DT, Donovan Jeter, released his top 9 earlier this month and the Lions also made this group. The 4 star from the Pittsburg area, Beaver Falls to be exact, comes in at 6’4 265 and holds 27 offers.  Yet a third defensive tackle, Ben Hutch has the Nittany Lions in his top group. The 3 star does not reportedly hold a Penn State offers and Louisville is considered the heavy favorites. I’m not finished with the defensive line yet, as 3 star DE James Hudson of Ohio as has the Nittany Lions in his top group. Hudson who is 6’5 280, decommitted from Kentucky in May and has recieved a handful of offers since.

This is an encouraging sign for Franklin as he needs to reload the depth lost of the defensive line from this past season.

A recap of this weekend will follow and we will update the visitors list if there are any changes.
