Recruiting Update: 5/25/11

Recruiting Update: 5/25/11
OH DB Tyvis Powell received on offer after camping in Columbus over the weekend. I like his sense of style already.

There are plenty of things to go over in this update, including new offers in the 2012 and 2013 class, so let’s jump right in.

While it initially seemed like there was no way that Alabama QB Jameis Winston was going to leave his home state, after visiting Columbus over the weekend he had some very positive things to say about the Buckeyes and he would like to set up another official visit for the Wisconsin game. With CA QB Shane Dillon out of the picture, it looks like Ohio State may still be in on a QB prospect in 2012 after all.

While I don’t think the Buckeyes are the favorite at this point or even close to it, Winston is clearly very interested in the Buckeyes and it could turn into an interesting recruitment to say the least. Could we get some revenge for Trey DePriest?

GA WR Jaquay Williams is scheduled to announce his college decision this weekend. He will likely be choosing between Ohio State and Auburn. Players that wait until the end of the recruiting process usually don’t gravitate towards Columbus, but Tressel and company have a much higher success rate with players who commit early.

The Buckeyes have been one of Williams’ favorites since the beginning, so fingers crossed. One thing worth noting is that if he is choosing between Ohio State and Auburn, you have to assume that any possible future sanctions aren’t a concern for him.

As expected, there are some new camp offers to go over on the 2012 Big Board, and they will likely keep coming in over the next few days so stay tuned. I have also finally gotten around to going over the very earliest offers on the 2013 Big Board, two for the price of one!

2012

New Offers

Jarron Jones (DL)

Highlights: Video #1, Video #2

Offers: Ohio State, Penn State (‘soft’ verbal), Michigan, Notre Dame, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College, UConn, Louisville, South Florida, Buffalo

6’6″ 305 lbs.

Rochester (NY) Aquinas Institute

Jarron Jones is a huge defensive line prospect with offers from just about everyone. He is currently committed to Penn State but is considered a soft commit and is looking around. It seems unlikely that he ends up in Columbus, but it would be pretty funny if he went somewhere other than Happy Valley.

Herbert Waters (WR)

Highlights: Video #1, Video #2, Video #3

Offers: Ohio State, Florida State, Oregon, Louisville, West Virginia, UCF, Marshall

6’1″ 170 lbs.

Homestead (FL) HS

Herbert Waters is a WR prospect with outstanding quickness to go along with above average size. Coach Drayton apparently offered Waters after seeing him in person, and in person offers are always a good sign for a players ability.

Tyvis Powell (DB)

Highlights: Video #1

Offers: Ohio State, Minnesota, West Virginia, Akron, Ball State, Buffalo, Ohio, Toledo, Western Michigan, Youngstown State

6’4′ 185 lbs.

Bedford (OH) HS

Tyvis Powell is a big, physical defensive back prospect that is not afraid of contact. Let me emphasize that he is big again. You can’t teach a player to be 6’4″, so he has that going for him. Powell lines up at CB and S in his highlight film. With his size, it seems likely that he ends up at S, but if he is able to play CB at the next level that would be pretty incredible. He earned an offer at camp, and with Ohio State’s track record in the secondary, you have to be excited by that. Tyvis Powell will very likely be wearing scarlet and gray in the future, and we will know for sure soon($).

Ondre Pipkins (DL)

Highlights: Video #1

Offers: Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Iowa, Kansas, Kansas State, Michigan State, Minnesota, Illinois, Missouri, Northern Illinois

6’3″ 325 lbs.

Kansas City (MO) Park Hill HS

Ondre Pipkins is a big DT prospect that is being pursued by some major programs across the country. It is yet to be determined what his interest is in Ohio State, so stay tuned. He won defensive line MVP at camp in Columbus over the weekend.

2013

New Offers

Cameron Burrows (DB)

Highlights: Video #1

Offers: Ohio State, Cincinnati, Colorado, Illinois, Missouri, Purdue

6’2″ 195 lbs.

Trotwood (OH) Madison HS

Cameron Burrows is a big time defensive back prospect in the class of 2013. His highlight video speaks for itself so it is nice to see the Buckeyes getting in early with an offer.

Billy Price (DL)

Offers: Ohio State

6’4″ 265 lbs.

Austintown (OH) Fitch HS

Billy Price is one of the top defensive linemen in Ohio in 2013 that the Buckeyes extended an early offer to. Receiving the offer was “a dream come true” and although he says he will go through the recruiting process, it is hard to see him ending up anywhere but Columbus.

Henry Poggi (DL)

Offers: Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn, Iowa, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Virginia

6’4″ 245 lbs.

Baltimore (MD) Gilman School

Based on the early offers, it is clear that Henry Poggi is one of the top prospects in the country for the 2013 class. It will be interesting to see where this recruitment goes, as Ohio State has targeted multiple players from Gilman School over the past several years, so hopefully that gives them a bit of an advantage here.

Richard Benjamin (WR)

Highlights: Video #1

Offers: Ohio State, Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Miami (FL), Notre Dame, USC, Cincinnati, Clemson, Eastern Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Rutgers, South Florida, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt, Wake Forrest, West Virginia, Wisconsin

6’1″ 180 lbs.

Tampa (FL) Middleton HS

Richard Benjamin’s offer sheet speaks for itself. It is pretty amazing, particularly when you consider how early it is for the 2013 class. Benjamin would obviously be a great get, but with so much interest, it is hard seeing him heading to Columbus. We will have to wait and see.

Dropped

MI CB Terry Richardson committed to Michigan.
