The Red Sox lost the first game of the series by way of an error in the 9th, so they hoped to even the score last night in Chicago. The Red Sox had Clay Buchholz on the mound vs. John Danks for the White Sox. In the end, neither starter would have much to say in how this game went as it was decided in the 14th inning with a position player on the mound for the White Sox. The Sox did even the series, but it wasn’t pretty.
The Red Sox jumped on Danks early getting three hits and a run before he could record an out. Pedey hit a double and then Xander brought him home with an RBI single. Red Sox 1-0. Papi hit a single, but that would be the last hit the Red Sox would get against the White Sox for a long long time. The White Sox were able to tie up the game in the bottom of the 1st inning without recording a hit. Eaton got hit by a pitch, he got to 2nd by way of an error and then got home by way of another error. Red Sox 1-1. The game stayed tied 1-1 until the 6th inning when Clay gave up a 2 run homerun to Ramirez. Red Sox 1-3. At that point it kind of felt like the Red Sox might never win another game again. Clay was done after the inning and his pitching line for the night was 109 pitches, 6 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 2 BB and 6 Ks.
Craig Breslow was in the game in the 7th and pitched a scoreless inning. The Red Sox were able to get a run back in the bottom of the inning while not recording a hit themselves. The White Sox used 4 pitchers in the inning and they walked themselves into lots of trouble. Papi walked, Gomes walked, Sizemore hit into a groundout, Pierzynski hit a sac fly to score a run and then the White Sox walked Nava and Carp to load up the bases. The Red Sox were not able to capitalize on their lack of control again, but at least they were within one. Breslow came back out in the 8th and got an out before handing the ball over to Tazawa. Taz got the 2 outs and we were on to the 9th. The Red Sox were able to tie the game in the 9th when the White Sox continued their walking ways. Pedey walked, Bogaerts walked, Papi flied out and then Gomes did what no Red Sox player had been able to do since the first inning, he got a hit. Gomes hit an infield single to have the bases loaded. Sizemore hit a sac fly and the game was tied 3-3.
Andrew Miller came out to pitch a scoreless 9th inning and we were on to extra innings. The Red Sox were unable to score in the top of the 10th and Miller pitched another scoreless inning in the 10th. David Webb, who was the last available pitcher for the White Sox, took the mound in the 11th and ended up giving up the lead to the Red Sox. Gomes hit a sac fly to bring Pedroia to the plate. Red Sox 4-3. Edward Mujica came into the game because Koji Uehara was still unavailable. Mujica ended up getting his second blown save of the season and it’s only the middle of April. Mujica gave up an RBI single to Flowers and the game was once again tied.
Chris Capuano took the mound in the 12th and he was able to keep the game tied until the next time the Red Sox could take the lead. Capuano pitched a scoreless 12th and 13th innings. At the same time the White Sox pitching was issuing walks all over the place, however the Red Sox didn’t seem to be able to take advantage. Webb pitched 3 full innings and since the White Sox were out of pitchers they sent out utility infielder Leury Garcia to the mound. Garcia got 2 outs before becoming quite wild on the mound. Nava and Herrera both walked before Jackie Bradley Jr came to the plate. In total the White Sox walked 15 batters last night in the 5 hour game. Bradley Jr. hit a 2 run RBI double to score Nava and Herrera. Red Sox 6-4. Chris Capuano got 2 outs in the bottom of the 14th before Burke Badenhop came out to record the final out of the game. In many ways that was a brutal game. Of course it was a little less brutal because the Red Sox were able to come out of it with a win.
Red Sox 6 White Sox 4 F/14 BOXSCORE
WP: Capuano (1-0) LP: Garcia (0-1) SV: Badenhop (1)
