The Red Sox DFAed AJ Pierzynski and with Christian Vazquez making his debut in the lineup, they were clearly going with youth. The Sox had 5 rookies in the lineup last night: Holt, Bogaerts, Betts, Vazquez and De La Rosa. The Sox had a hard time with phenom pitcher Chris Sale, but once he was out of the game the Sox started their dramatic comeback.
Rubby De La Rosa started the game off on a sour note when he gave up a solo HR to Jose Abreu to have the White Sox up 1-0. In the top of the 2nd one of the rookies would show exactly why he was in the lineup when Jackie Bradley Jr made a spectacular giving catch in CF. It might have been one of the best plays I have ever seen. Rubby would give up his 2nd HR of the game when he gave up a solo HR to Gillaspie to have the Red Sox down 0-2. In the 4th we got to see Christian Vazquez’s gun for the first time in the majors. Viciedo reached by way of an error from Nap and Gillaspie scored from 3rd, however when the throw came home, Vazquez flipped the ball around to 2nd base and Viciedo was tagged out at 2nd base. I’ve loved watching Vazquez’s arm is something special to watch. Still Red 0-3.
Rubby De La Rosa was done after 5 inning and Craig Breslow took to the mound in the 6th. Breslow has struggled lately, but he was able to pitch a quick and easy 1-2-3 inning. Mujica took the mound for the 7th and he did continue his season of struggle. Mujica gave up a double on a ball to the Monster that ended up hitting Gomes in the face and De Aza tried to score from 1st, but Gomes recovered and made a great throw to Vazquez to get him out at home. Mujica did give up the 4th and final run by the Red Sox when he gave up an RBI double to Eaton. Red 0-4.
The Red Sox weren’t able to get anything going against Chris Sale, however the White Sox would make the mistake of taking him off the mound in 8th inning. As soon as Sale was out of the game, the Sox bats got to work. With 2 outs in the 8th inning the Red Sox put together a rally to be within a run. Pedey hit an RBI single to score Mookie Betts, Ortiz hit an RBI double to plate Pedroia, Napoli walked and then Gomes hit an RBI double to score Papi. Red 3-4. There was suddenly life in this game. Koji Uehara came out to pitch a quick 1-2-3 9th inning striking out the side. The Sox bats took to the bottom of the 9th hoping to at least tie, if not win this thing. Mookie Betts got hit by a pitch and then Nava was able to tie the game when he hit an RBI double to deep center. Red 4-4. Brock Holt came to the plate and had his first walk off with the Red Sox. Holt hit an single to right as Brock Holt came around to the plate. Seeing the Red Sox celebrating walk off style taking a little edge off how they have been playing as of late.
Red Sox 5 White Sox 4 BOXSCORE
