It is now the third day in a row that the Boston Red Sox have struck a trade. After acquiring Aaron Hill from the Brewers and Michael Martinez from the Indians, the Boston Red Sox announced they have acquired RP Brad Ziegler from the Arizona Diamondbacks. In return, the Red Sox sent minor league pitcher Jose Almonte and minor league infielder Luis Alejandro Basabe to Arizona.

Ziegler, 36, has nine years of MLB experience and has spent the past five and a half seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, after spending three and a half years with the Oakland Athletics. Ziegler served as the team’s closer the past two seasons, where he has accumulated 48 saves. This season, Ziegler has a 2-3 record, with a 2.82 ERA and 18 saves and will likely become a setup man, and situational closer for the Red Sox.
Almonte, 20, has spent the past year in Low-A Greenville, where in 10 starts, he has pitched to a 2-2 record with a 3.91 ERA. The native of the Dominican Republic is currently a starting pitcher, but has the ability to move into the bullpen as he moves up the minor league ranks.
Basabe, 19, has enjoyed a breakout season in the Red Sox minor league system, where he has hit .310 with four home runs and 25 RBI in 64 games in Low-A Greenville.
Not be confused with his twin brother Luis Alexander Basabe (who is an outfielder), Luis Alejandro Basabe plays the infield, and his rise this season earned him a No. 18 prospect ranking on soxprospects.com, six spots behind his brother (who is No. 8 according to MLB Pipeline). This will be the first time Luis Alej. Basabe has played on a team without his brother.
