Red Sox Are Running Out of Options at the Corner

The Red Sox are not close on getting Adrian Gonzalez according to several beat writers and their other options for a corner infielder are quickly vanishing.  Yesterday we learned that Boston would not go after Adrian Beltre because of his high price tag.  We also learned that the cheaper option of Nick Johnson is headed to the Yanks. That leaves the Red Sox with Casey Kotchman as the first basemen and Youk playing third.  Francona is okay with that:

“I think Kotch kind of goes under the radar because he came over [after the trade deadline last season] and he didn’t play and he didn’t say anything and he just kind of went about his business. We can do just fine with Kotch playing first, hitting down toward the bottom of the order and catching everything in sight. I’m pretty comfortable with that.”

The Sox might be better off with Mike Lowell who may not be going to Texas.  Joe McDonald of the ProJo put the chances of the deal going through at 50/50.
