Red Sox Bats Can’t Get Going Against Shields, Fall to Rays

The Red Sox had won 9 in a row and took the field in the Trop hoping to make it 10 in row.  Tim Wakefield was on the mound for the Sox and James Shield was on the mound for the Rays.  Tim Wakefield was good, unfortunately…Shields was better.  The Sox bats just weren’t able to get anything started against him.  They did load the bases against him in the 1st, but were unable to get a runner home.  After about the 2nd inning, Shields really settled in and seemed to just mow down Sox batters in order.   Wakefield gave up a solo HR in the 5th to Justin Ruggiano.  Evan Longoria scored on a passed ball in the 6th.  Wake’s pitching line for the night was 107 pitches thrown, 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 2 Ks.  Tommy Hottovy came out in relief in the 8th and wasn’t as sharp as we’ve seen him in recent outings.  He gave up 2 hits and allowed a run to score.  Alfredo Aceves took his spot on the mound and allowed a bloop hit to give the Rays a 4-0 lead.  Other than that, he looked just as great as he has all season.

This game was Carl Crawford’s first return to the Trop since signing with the Sox.  In his first at bat, he got a few boos, but many more cheers.  Crawford didn’t have a great night at the plate in his return, going 0 for 3.  Then again, no one except Adrian Gonzalez (who went 3 for 4) had a great night at the plate against James Shields.

We win some.  Heck, we win a lot.  We lose some.  Let’s go get them today and even this series up!
