Thirteen months ago, when the New York Yankees shelled out $12 million to keep Derek Jeter for one more season, many scoffed saying he was past his prime and not worth it.
And who knows, after posted a career-low .256 and an overall yuck of a season…maybe they were right.
However, the Yankees (and, really, anyone with a pulse) financially made the best move they could have. Simply put, they do know a thing or two about making money and I’m willing to bet they made that $12 million back (and then some) by ensuring everyone in the Bronx had a pinstriped Number 2 on their back instead of seeing folks trotting around with “JETER” in their team’s colors.
Suffice it to say, the Boston Red Sox have seemingly gotten wise (finally) to the Jeter cash cow.
As you might recall, the former Yankees captain played his final game at Boston’s Fenway Park and according to the New York Post, the Red Sox are not only auctioning off the ball Jeter his as his final out as a pro, but, also, the first base bag used when the future-Hall of Famer recorded his last hit in the bigs.
And, yeah…both are going to cost you a pretty penny.
