Red Sox Designate Sizemore for Assignment

It seems as if the Grady Sizemore experiment in Boston is over.  It was announced today that the team designated Sizemore for assignment and called up infielder Garin Cecchini.   Sizemore was signed by the Sox for outfield depth and after having a phenomenal spring training he was able to make the Opening Day roster.  The Sox were taking a chance on Sizemore who was looking to make a comeback after not playing for the last 2 years due to injuries.  Sizemore wasn’t able to capitalize on his spring training magic and really struggled at the plate.  Sizemore was batting .216 with an on base percentage of .288 this season with the Sox.  That just isn’t the kind of production that the Sox need out of someone in their outfield.

This is the second callup for Cecchini this season.  Cecchini is rated as the #4 Prospect in the Red Sox farm system.  Cecchini is a third baseman and has been hitting .263 with 2 homeruns with Pawtucket this season.  It looks like he will be depth for the left side of the infield, especially with Will Middlebrooks’ future being uncertain.
