The Red Sox had 4 picks in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft. Here are their selections:
#19: RHP Matt Barnes (UConn). Barnes has a decent 91-93 MPH fastball. He also has some nice breaking stuff and a decent curve. Word on the street is that he was the expected first pick.
#26: C Blake Swihart (V. Sue Cleveland HS). Swihart is a switch hitter with power. He doesn’t project to be a long term catcher though. He will probably end up as a corner infielder because of his lack of speed. Swihart will also be a tough sign since he has committed to the Univ. of Texas.
#36: LHP Henry Owens (Edison HS). Owens is a big kid…6’6″. He has a 90-92 mph fastball, nice breaking and off speed stuff. He has gotten a lot of Zito comparison.
#40: OF Jackie Bradley Jr (South Carolina). Bradley struggled at the plate this season with a .259 average. He was also sidelined with a wrist injury that required surgery. He has an above average OF arm, however has below average OF speed.
