Red Sox Last Night: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly!

The Good:

David Ortiz.  Easily he is the good.  We’ve all wondered if Papi was going to hit.  His bat has shown signs of life lately, but also still shown signs of struggle.  Last night, he not only hit two HRs…but one of them was against a lefty.  He smoked that ball out of the park and we got to see that Papi stance at the plate.  You know the one.  The one where he knows he the ball is gone and just sits there and watches it fly.  Hopefully Papi can grow on this success…and we can get our DH back.  And maybe it will quell the silly, ridiculous writers…both blog and beat writers who keep saying a DFA is coming.  Never gonna happen, but Papi might have saved him some time riding the bench with his performance last night.

The Bad:

Dice-K.  It wasn’t ugly (we’ll get to that), but it was bad.  Dice-K started off with a walk and I heard a collective groan in Red Sox Nation.  However, after that…he locked in for 4 innings.  His pitch count was in control, he was commanding the strike zone, he was throwing strike one.  However, 4 innings does not get it done.  Once Dice-K gave up the HR…it all fell apart.  He lost whatever confidence and swagger that he had…and the lead.  I’m not calling it ugly though because of those 4 innings…there is a lot to build upon.

The Ugly:

Wake.  It’s you.  Dice-K was bad, no question..but Wake was horrible.  He came out of the pen and nothing was working.  He was giving up hits and HRs like it was his job.  It was brutal to watch.  The O’s were hitting off Wake like they were in BP.  I love Wake…and always want him to do well, but let’s be real…he just hasn’t been sharp in 2010.  There is a reason he’s the one sitting in the pen…because he just hasn’t consistently been able to get innings and not allow hits.  His ERA is 6.59.  I want the Wake from 2009 back…like now.
