Two pitches before Trot Nixon lined a ball that hit Foulke in the pitching elbow during the closer’s first simulated game, the right-hander jammed outfielder Adam Stern on a pitch that Stern popped up.
The contact further aggravated Stern’s balky right thumb, which in the past two weeks has felt strange to him and has had a decreased range of motion.
