In the midst of a CBA controversy and major league signings, former Red Sox minor leaguers are on the move. A few notable minor leaguers have signed with new teams, including one surprising major league deal.
Ryan LaMarre: The former Cincinnati Reds’ second round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft has signed a one-year, major league pact with the Los Angeles Angels. LaMarre, 27, spent this past season mostly at the AAA level with the Boston Red Sox, hitting .303, with 10 home runs, and 41 runs batted in with Triple-A Pawtucket. LaMarre has played just 26 major league games, including six with the Red Sox last season, and has a .067 batting average. However, LaMarre is coming off his best AAA season, and the Angels are banking on him to be effective depth for a largely stable outfield.
William Cuevas: The 26-year-old Venezuelan had spent his entire career in the Red Sox organization, but has now signed a minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers. Cuevas made his major league debut this season with a 0-1 record and a 3.60 ERA in five innings pitched for the Red Sox. Cuevas will provide starter/reliever depth in Detroit, and could see time as a long man for the Tigers this upcoming season.
Henry Ramos: Once regarded as a top prospect in the Red Sox system, Ramos, a former fifth round pick in the 2010 MLB Draft, has moved on from the organization and signed a minor league deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Ramos reached AAA for the first time last season and hit .247 with five home runs and 29 RBIs in 57 games. Ramos will seek to take the same route as Andrew Toles, who had a great deal of promise, signed a minor league deal with the Dodgers, and broke through this season.
The Red Sox organization will now seek to replace these organizational pieces and will likely secure these roles in the coming months.
