The Sox hadn’t won a game in a week and hoped that with ace Jon Lester on the mound that they would be able to put a stop to that. Lester gave up some runs early, however he was able to settle down and keep his team in the game. The Sox bats were able to get a later inning rally and get that elusive first win of the west coast road trip.
Jon Lester gave up a single run in the 1st inning with an RBI to Jesus Montero. Sox 0-1. In the 3rd inning, Lester gave up back to back solo HRs to Gutierrez and Seager. Sox 0-3. With how difficult it has been for the Sox to score runs lately those 3 runs seemed like 3000. Lester settled in and kept pitching along. In the top of the 6th, the Sox bats showed up and scored enough runs to give Lester a chance at a win. Pedey and Ells both singled and then Cody Ross hit a 3 run HR to tie the game. Sox 3-3. The Sox took the lead on a solo HR from Ryan Lavarnway. It was Lavarnway’s first HR of the season and it couldn’t have come at a better time. Sox 4-3. Lester pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the 6th and was done for the night. His pitching line was 111 pitches, 6 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 2 BB and 4 Ks.
The Sox bullpen took over in the 7th and pitched 3 scoreless innings to get the win. Breslow got an out, but also gave up 2 singles in the 7th. Bobby V replaced him with Tazawa and he got the two outs he needed to get out of the inning. Tazawa is quickly becoming one of those arms that the team is relying upon in high pressure situations. Padilla pitched himself a 1-2-3 8th inning and then handed the ball over to Bailey in the 9th. Bailey freaked out all of Red Sox Nation when he gave up a 2 out triple to keep the inning going. However Bailey got Seager to fly out to end the game.
Red Sox win. Finally. Water is dirty, let’s keep it that way.
