There was not much to celebrate for Red Sox fans on opening day through the first eight innings today. Verlander continued right were he left off after his MVP and Cy Young season and dominated the Sox batters. He allowed just two hits in eight innings. Valverde came in for the ninth and blew the save and allowed the Red Sox to tie it up with two outs in the ninth on an RBI triple by Sweeney.
The Red Sox bullpen looked bad in the bottom of the ninth. Melancon gave up two hits and was replaced by Aceves. After entering the game with one out and runners on first and second, Aceves hit a batter and then gave up a walk-off single.
Red Sox 2 Tigers 3 BOX SCORE
The Red Sox do not play again until Saturday so there will be plenty of time for everyone to over-analyze this one. This was obviously not the way that Valentine, Melancon and Aceves wanted to start out the season but the really story of the game was Verlander shutting down the Red Sox bats.
