Red Sox Stay Winless In Extras

The Red Sox took on the Orioles, but once again fell in extra innings.  This season the Sox have remained winless in any game that has gone more than 9 innings.  Aaron Cook took the mound for the Sox and while he wasn’t lights out, he did give the team a chance to rally back.

Cook gave up a single run in the first with an Adam Jones groundout.  Sox 0-1.  The Sox bats got that run right back in the bottom of the first when Lavarnway hit an RBI single.  Sox 1-1.  In the 2nd, the Orioles would grab the lead back with an RBI single from Machado.  Sox 1-2.  The O’s scored another run in the top of the 4th when Mark Reynolds hit a HR to the Monster.  Sox 1-3.  The Sox tied it up when Danny Valencia hit a 2 run HR well over the Monster.  Sox 3-3.  Cook lasted until the 6th inning when he gave up a single and a double.  Cook was done for the night and Rich Hill was in the game.  Hill gave up a 2 run RBI triple to Flaherty to give the Os a 5-3 lead.  Hill was done and Mortensen was in.  In the 7th, Mortensen gave up a solo HR to give the Os a 6-3 lead.

The same seemed to be getting out of reach for the Sox, however they started their comeback rally in the 7th.  The Sox had the bases loaded with no outs.  Cody Ross hit into an RBI forceout.  Sox 4-6.  Lavarnway hit an RBI groundout to get the Sox within one run.  Sox 5-6.  Breslow took the mound and pitched a scoreless 8th inning.  The Sox were able to tie the game with an RBI double from Podsednik in the 8th.  Sox 6-6.  Tazawa pitched a scoreless 9th and when the Sox bats were unable to score in the 9th, we were on to extra innings.  Bailey pitched a scoreless 10th and Melancon pitched a scoreless 11th.  The trouble started when Aceves came to the mound in the 12th.  Aceves started the inning giving up a leadoff double to Jones and then the RBI ground rule double to Thome.  Sox 6-7.  Aceves gave up another run with a single from Chavez.  Bobby V had enough and took Aceves off the mound.  Carpenter came into the game and gave up an RBI single to have the Sox down 6-9.  That would be it for the Sox since they didn’t have another rally in their bones.

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a season where the Sox have never won an extra innings game.  If the Sox don’t win in extras in the next week, that’ll be just what we’ve seen.  The O’s and the Yankees both won in extras last night, so the O’s are still sitting one game back from the Yanks in the race for the AL East.
