The game last night was sold as a pitcher’s duel between Josh Beckett and CC Sabathia….however, for a while it seemed like the game might not have a chance to be played because of rain. A group of thunderstorms was heading through NYC and it started to pour just about game time. The game was in delay and when you just thought the game had to be postponed, it was announced that the game would in fact be played. The first pitch was thrown not at 7:05pm EST but 10:32 EST.
Josh Beckett got off to a rocky start. He hit Deter Jeter to start the game and then immediately gives up a HR to Curtis Granderson. Beckett allowed two runs to score before he could score an out. However, that is all the Yankees would be able to get against him. He locked it down and just kept rolling inning after inning. Josh’s pitching line ended up being 7 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 BB, 1 HR, 6 Ks and 3 HBP.
CC Sabathia began the game with his usual dominant self. He was controlling the strike zone and making pitches when he needed to. He was just rolling on. As a result of the many Yanks players who have been HBP during this series, Sabathia hit Ortiz in the top of the 4th. The crowd cheered and Papi just smiled and headed over to 1st base. The Sox weren’t able to score in the 4th, but Papi would have his revenge later in the game. Sabathia took the mound in the 7th for what would be his last inning. At this point, he was in line for a 2-0 win. However, this is when Papi would have his revenge. Papi hit a leadoff single. Jed Lowrie hit an RBI TRIPLE misplayed by Nick Swisher to make the score 2-1 Yanks. Cameron hit an RBI double to tie the game 2-2 with just one out. Tek followed that by a single and it seemed the wheels were coming off for Sabathia. Ellsbury followed it with an RBI single for the Sox to take the lead 3-2. But wait, there is more. Gonzalez hit a single to score Ellsbury and chase Sabathia from the game with a Sox 4-2 lead. David Robertson entered the game with two outs and Ellsbury on 3rd base. Robertson gives up an RBI single to Kevin Youkilis to give the Sox a 5-2 lead. David Ortiz came to the plate AGAIN in the inning…and hit a 2 RBI double to give the Sox a 7-2 lead. David Ortiz arrived at 2B and was in celebration of what the Sox had just done this inning. He threw up the Rangers version of a CLAW as he strolled into base.

Matt Albers had a scoreless inning in the 8th to keep the Sox rolling. The Sox would add a run on in the top of the 9th on a Gonzo double that plated Scutaro. Dan Wheeler allowed a single run to score in the 9th, but when the game ended…well into the wee hours of the morning the Sox won 8-3.
