Red Sox Take Series in Chicago Behind Lester’s Strong Start

The Red Sox have definitely been scuffling at the start this season and needed the win last night in order to head back to Fenway with some positive energy.  The Red Sox had Jon Lester on the mound vs. Chris Sale for the White Sox.  Both pitchers were dealing and had no hitters going into the 6th inning.  Lester was able to out duel Sale by a smidge and then the return of our much missed closer Koji Uehara put the game away for the Sox.

Jon Lester once again looked spectacular on the mound.  He’s been absolutely on fire since the season started while getting little to no run support from his team.  Lester could easily be 4-0 this season if he got any kind of bats going on behind him.  Lester had a perfect game going into the 6th inning, but the only problem was that Chris Sale was also bringing a no hitter of his own into the 6th inning.  Sale ended up breaking first.  Xander Bogaerts hit a no doubter solo HR against Sale to have the Red Sox leading 1-0.  Unfortunately in the bottom of the inning the White Sox were able to get to Lester and eek out a run against him as well.  Flowers broke up the no hitter with an infield single, Garcia hit a ground rule double and then Flowers came home on an RBI infield single by Eaton.  Sox 1-1.  The White Sox tried to take the lead in the 7th when De Aza hit a double and Adam Dunn tried to score from 1st base.  Unfortunately for Adam Dunn he is one of the slowest creatures on the planet and was thrown out at home with ease.

Lester pitched 8 strong innings, but as he left the mound he was in line for a no decision.  Lester’s pitching line for the night was 112 pitches, 8 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 0 BB and 9 Ks.  The Sox bats came to play in the top of the 9th and were able to grab a couple of runs and put Lester finally in position for a win.  David Ross hit an RBI double to score Napoli to put them on top 2-1.  Nava was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out and then Herrera hit an RBI infield bunt single to score Sizemore.  Red Sox 3-1.  That would be enough for Koji Uehara who took the mound for the 9th after missing a few games with shoulder tenderness.  Koji gave up a single, but was able to get the 3 outs he needed to get the save and the win.
