It’s. About. Time.
Unlike their rival New York Yankees who appear to celebrate anyone who might’ve donned the pinstripes, the Boston Red Sox have very specific rules when it comes to retiring numbers of their former stars. Players had to have been with the team for at least ten seasons and have ended their careers in BeanTown.
Despite his five batting titles during his eleven seasons with the Sox (and the fact he’d play seven more seasons with two other teams), Wade Boggs has yet to see his number 26 retired and added to the right field facade at Fenway Park.
But on Monday, the team announced that they would drop one of their restrictions and honor the Hall of Famer.

”I am so humbled and honored,” Boggs said in a statement released by his former team. ”To say that your number will never be worn again is the highest honor an athlete can receive.”
Since Boggs departed Boston for the Big Apple following the 1992 season, thirteen different Red Sox wore number 26…the most recent being 2015 All-Star Brock Holt.

Holt will change his number from 26 to 12 this upcoming season.
Boston will honor Boggs May 26 before their game against the Colorado Rockies. The former third baseman’s number will be the tenth retired by the Red Sox.
