Maybe all that Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz needed was some semblance of a rest.
The result of that rest, Ramirez drove in three runs and Ortiz drove in two in the Boston Red Sox (54-34) win over the Toronto Blue Jays (43-45) in the process of roughing up Roy Halladay for five runs.
Both hitters, Ortiz and Manny, combined for five hits and five RBI’s in the game against the Jays.
Tim Wakefield (10-8) out dueled Halladay (10-4) going 6 innings pitched, on nine hits, four runs, zero walks, two strikeouts, and gave up two long balls.
Halladay suffered his fourth loss of the season throwing for 5 innings, on eight hits, five runs, four walks, and two strikeouts.
Boston got to Halladay early in the bottom of the first inning breaking the game open from the get-go.
Ortiz drove in his first of two RBI’s on a single to right, Ramirez added an RBI double down the line in left, Kevin Youkilis grounded out to second scoring Ortiz, and Mike Lowell notched the last run of the inning off of Halladay singling to left bringing the score to 4-1.
The Boston lineup knocked in four runs on five hits off of Halladay in the inning.
Although, Boston jumped on Toronto early the Jays still had some fight in them making it a one-run game in the top of the sixth on back-to-back homeruns from Matt Stairs and Alex Rios bringing the score to 5-4.
Ortiz and Ramirez answered back in the bottom half of the inning as Ortiz doubled home Dustin Pedroia and Ramirez singled bringing Big Papi home making it 7-4.
Jonathan Papelbon came into the game in the ninth finishing the Jays off picking up his 21st save of the season.
