The Red Wings had the biggest game of the season last night against the Flamers, who are nipping at their heels in the Western Conference. In Calgary, the Wings met the challenge despite falling behind 1-0 early on.
The real high of the game came with less than two minutes left in what was an already very action packed second period. While the Wings were on a power play, the Flames had a breakaway that was prevented by Williams’s hook. As a result, the Flames were rewarded with a penalty shot. Luckily, Jimmy Howard came up with a huge save on an unoriginal wrister. Seconds later, Datsyuk tied things up with this beauty:
Then in the third period with nearly a minute to go before OT, the Red Wings found the back of the net when a Franzen shot got redirected off the stick of Thomas Homstrom. The Wings would hold on in true, exciting fahsion and gain two very important points over the Flames, putting a light, dainty, chokehold on the 8th spot for the time being. This game had all kinds of playoff feel to it, so if you missed it I at least recommend you watching the highlights here:
Also of note: In the first period, Thomas Holmstrom appeared to get hurt in the corner just 34 seconds into the game. Rather, his skate’s blade fell off and naturally, he fell over. Embarrassing moment for Holmer:
