Happy Friday everyone, and I hope you enjoy this long overdue edition of the latest installment of “Fan Friday” .
Mike C. is a 26 year old Celtics fan who hails from E.Hartford, Connecticut. Mike first became interested in the Boston Celtics during the 2004-05 season. Doc Rivers had just taken over for Jim O’Brien/John Carroll.
I started watching in the Celtics 04-05 season. They were horrible but where I was living had CSNNE available. I was so naive back then that I was rooting for the Pierce/Ricky Davis due to work out haha. That Christmas my family got me the Celtics NBA Dynasty series that has all the history and famous games. So seeing the ’86 Celtics got me very interested. Seeing Larry Bird dominating made me want to play basketball. After watching that series alone, my Celtic Pride started.
As far as favorite Celtics go, Mike’s choice is a popular one-Larry Legend.
Larry Bird is hands down my favorite Celtic. I loved when KG came to Boston and I love what Pierce could do. But Larry just made amazing things happen. I have only been able to watch the games that are on DVD or on Hulu. But man, with how he was, with his trash talking, with how he played the game I was drawn to him immediately.
Mike’s most memorable Celtics experience was their 2007-08 title run. He was fortunate enough to catch one game in person, and caught up on the rest any way he could while at Basic Training.
I was at Basic Training for the Army when the Celtics got to the Finals in 07-08. My brother, as a going away present brought me to Celtics vs. Pistons ECF game in Boston and it was amazing. Throughout basic training I was getting game recaps in the mail from my family about the Finals. After BT was over I bought the Celtics Collections Edition 5 disc series with the Pierce vs Lebron game and the 4 Finals wins. I watched every game back to back. I felt like I was in heaven.
The Celtics are a “way of life” as Mike explains. To him, and millions of other C’s fans all over the world, the C’s are more than just a basketball team. That’s what makes being a Celts fan so unique. That passion and undying loyalty that comes with being a true die-hard.
For me the Celtics have always been there. My Dad left when I was a kid and basketball was my escape. Then the Celtics magnified that. The Celtics also taught me, from listening to Tommy to watching them play, what being a Celtic means. I use those in everyday life surprisingly. Much like what the Celtics have in the weight room on the wall… “What hurts more, the pain of hard work or the pain of regret?” Celtics are just a way of life.
I want to first of all thank Mike for serving our country-I have the utmost respect for the men & women of the US armed forces & all that they do. I also thank him for being a part of Fan Friday and sharing his story with us. Be sure to give him a follow on Twitter. Thank you all for reading and GO CELTICS. -KWAPT
