Boston hip-hop legend and die-hard Celtics fan Slaine took some time out of his busy schedule to talk Celtics with me. I’ve been a fan of his music and films for a long time, so this was truly an honor:
KWAPT- So how long have you been a Celtics fan, and what or who got you interested in following the C’s?
I’ve been a Celtics fan since before I can remember literally. I was watching games with my old man when I was 2 or 3 years old. I think in Boston you not only get that interest in sports from your family but also from your friends and neighborhood. Growing up as a little kid in Dorchester, there were probably 100 kids on my block and everyone was into the Celtics of course as well as the Sox, Bs and Patriots. The Celtics back then though had just gotten a young guy named Larry Bird and he had the entire city very interested in the Cs to say the least. Red Auerbach was still running that franchise back then. That was the golden era.
Obviously Boston has had many legendary players, but who would you say is your favorite?
It changes as the years go by. Of course Larry was the fuckin’ man when I was growing up but I also liked Ainge a lot in the 80s and McHale had the great footwork and low post moves. But I think when I got old enough and had the ability to go get into the games and suffered through some really bad seasons I really appreciated how hard it was to get back to that championship level. Paul Pierce really was with that team through a lot of ups and downs and finally got a title in 2008. He adjusted his game through so many changes along the way. He was electric in his prime. Great shooter and scorer. He is my favorite I think. KG has a special place in my heart too when it comes to great Celtics.
You’ve been courtside for some memorable games. Which one evokes the best memories for you?
Definitely Game 4 of the 2008 Finals which I went to in LA at The Staples Center with Everlast. The Celtics were down 26 at the half and came back to win in LA. I was decked out in my Celtics gear and being taunted the whole first half and then everything changed. I was going bananas and taunting my entire section. It ended up being the greatest comeback in the history of The NBA Finals! And of course we know what happened in the following games.

Why are the Celtics so important you and how have they impacted your life?
I mean I am a huge sports fan, but The Celtics are The Team in Boston to me. They are the team that represents excellence, history and a winning tradition. I love basketball in general, and I think that they have just brought me a lot of entertainment and great memories over the years. We have been privileged to watch the sport played at the highest possible level. We have had legend after legend, for so many years, fighting for us with that Boston Celtics jersey representing the city we love so much.
Your next release, “The Boston Project”, drops in about a month. What can fans expect from it?
Yeah man. April 16th The Boston Project will be released world wide. It’s a solo album, not a compilation, but I collaborated with 30 artists over 17 tracks. I feel like I really made a dope rap record that illustrates the talent that exists in the hip hop arena in Boston. It is definitely an album that is close to my heart, and I am very proud of it.
