RedsArmy presents Fan Friday #30:

I’d like to start this post out by saying thank you to everyone for the great feedback on “Fan Friday”. I had a blast last season meeting, & in some cases, getting to know alot of very cool people. CelticsNation is spread out all over the world. It is truly a blessing that through the wonders of social media and the internet I now communicate with 1000’s of C’s fans from across the globe. So without further adieu…

Boston Celtics fan & loyal Red’s Army reader Michelle was born & raised in the Philippines. She works as a flight attendant, and her occupation currently has her residing in Saudi Arabia. She’s been a Red’s Army reader and Celtics fan for a few years and grew-up loving basketball. Getting to see the Celtics play was not easy for her as a kid. Regular season games were seldom broadcast, so she’d have to wait until playoff time to get to see Boston in action. She got her hoops fix the rest of the year by watching some of the local Filipino leagues.

Michelle’s favorite player on the Celtics is Rajon Rondo. She says that he really caught her attention during the C’s 2008 title run:

I was like, who’s this scrawny kid with a headband bringing up the ball and shouting plays for the Big Three? That got me intrigued…”

Then, in 2010, when the C’s faced the Lakers again in the NBA Finals, Michelle says her “fandom got serious-Game 7 still stings.” It was then that she began digging-in and solidifying herself as a member of TeamCeltics. Her Dad told her all about Larry Bird, who he grew up watching, and Michelle was hooked:  “I googled stuff.  I watched clips.  I read blogs.  That’s how I got to know and appreciate the team.”

I can’t imagine what I’d do if I moved out of the country and couldn’t watch all of the Celtics’ games. Michelle found herself in a similar situation during last year’s playoffs. She was high above the earth, working as a flight attendant, and the C’s & Heat were battling in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. She had to hope for the best and pray she’d land to news that the C’s had won. She wore her Rajon Rondo jersey under her uniform to show her support for the guys in green:

Michelle’s fondest memory of watching the Celtics in person was last season at Oracle Arena. She was there on March 14th to watch KG bury a clutch jumper with 5.1 seconds left to clinch a victory for the Celtics.

I want to thank Michelle for participating in the first “Fan Friday” of the 2012-13 season, and of course thank all of you for reading. As always, if you know (or are) a Celtics fan that you’d like to see featured here, please get at me on Twitter, or email me: [email protected]. UBUNTU!
