This week’s “Fan Friday” features a loyal reader and good friend of Red’s Army, Glory. Some of you may know her by her Twitter handle, “FickWalker”.
Glory is a 30-something Celtic fan who hails from Sidney, Australia-which has a huge Celtics fan base. Like most Celtics fans, she is devoted, outspoken and stands by her team through ups and downs. She’s been an NBA fan all of her life, despite not being able to choose which teams she watched. Growing-up in the 1990’s, she was obviously subjected to a lot of Bulls games, Australian tv showing mostly playoff games, or nothing at all.
Then, in 2000, Glory’s life changed dramatically once she met her partner, a die-hard Celtics fan. It did not take long for her to become a huge fan of the green herself…
Glory lists Paul Pierce as her favorite player:
” It is hard for me to choose an ‘all-time favourite’ Celtic. I adore anyone who dons that green jersey and really buys-in to what that means. But I have to admit, I have a rather large soft spot for Paul Pierce. His tenacity, his skill, his class. I feel like Paul Pierce is the living embodiment of what it means to be a Celtic. Loyal, faithful, never say die. Those are qualities I admire in day-to-day life, as well as on the basketball court. The things he has overcome to be a part of Celtics history inspires me and motivates me to find things in my own life to devote myself to. The Celtics, of course, being at the top of that list.”
I sometimes try to imagine what it would be like rooting for the Celtics from the other side of the globe. No Mike & Tommy every game, no visits to TD Garden and watching games in the wee hours of the morning. It would take quite a bit more devotion and sacrifice. That is why I have so much respect for our Celtic family in Australia, Japan and the other far reaches of the globe.
I’ll let Glory wrap-up this edition of Fan Friday in her own words. You can find her on Twitter talking about everything from her beautiful 15 month-old daughter to the latest Celtics news. Thank you for reading! Ubuntu…
“How have the Celtics impacted my life? Green DOMINATES my world. It’s all over my clothes, my nails, my choice of bag (I am a girl fan, after all, lol)… It is ever present and all-consuming. From the replica 2008 banner that hangs from the rafters in our living room, to the Boston papers from June 2008 that are framed and mounted on my walls… Our house is a living, breathing shrine to the most amazing professional sports legacy of modern times. I thoroughly adore this team and this organization. The never-say-die attitude of everyone involved in the Celtics gives me not only hope, but motivation to keep pushing, to keep going, as well. There are rough patches, losing streaks, hard times… But the Celtics have taught me valuable lessons about loyalty, family, faith, pride, resilience, but most importantly? Danny Ainge has taught me to stay in bed on Trade Deadline Day. :)”
