“We’re winning off the field” has finally turned into “we’re winning in the offseason.”
Good things portend a few years down the road. Redskins fans haven’t seen a professionally managed offseason like this in decades.
The big question for the upcoming year is the maturity of Gruden and RG3. Will both mature or neither? If only one matures, RG3 is finished in Washington.
Was RG3’s rookie season a mirage? Even with the read option trickery that worked for that season, there were some beautiful throws. A few to Santana Moss really stood out that season.
RG3 still hasn’t picked up that nobody wants to hear a word from him when he is losing games and playing bad ball. That’s no time to give sermons. And of course, he needs to become a film rat and a pocket passer, as everyone knows by now.
Gruden meanwhile is very smart but made some immature moves his first year coaching. To name one, no quarterback coach.
If the entire Giants’ defense knew that Cousins telegraphed his every throw, why didn’t Gruden see that on tape? A QB coach would have seen that. Also, why did Gruden drain any last ounce of confidence that Cousins had in that horrific six interception Giants game? If Cousins telegraphed every throw and the Giants picked up on that, leaving Cousins in longer wasn’t going to make things better.
Immature coaching decisions.
Gruden’s freshman year NFL head coaching does not bode well for an elite athlete that is facing relentless criticism and scorn about his football abilities for the first time in his life. RG3 needs a giant leap ahead not just in pocket skills but in confidence as well.
RG3’s maturity issues aren’t just in social media. If you noticed on film, RG3’s injuries were caused by his lack of confidence or over confidence (which are oddly twin sisters). He didn’t have to take a high, weird angle leap out of bounds that shredded his ankle last season. He didn’t have to flail his leg when going against a giant defensive lineman in 2012. No doubt, his five step drop backs on plays called as three step drops were all this same issue.
In any case, the Unwatchable Redskins just may be worth seeing this year after all.
