What Jay Gruden needs to keep his job is unclear, but he gambled big on starting Kirk Cousins and benching RG3. Fortunately for Gruden and the Redskins, Colin Kaepernick is struggling mightily. If ever there was a potential player that projected as what a healthy RG3 could have done, it’s Kap.
In addition to Kap, Luck is also having his struggles. That is good luck for Gruden because it also shows quarterbacks that were supposed be amazing can have serious problems.
That brings us to the Atlanta game. The best job security Gruden could have would be to beat Atlanta and then have Atlanta go on to the Super Bowl (obviously the Redskins having a playoff run would be better, but let’s be realistic).
The reason is because Kyle Shanahan is the hot shot Offensive Coordinator in red-hot Atlanta right now.
Snyder has to realize that in the big debate of whether it was the coaches’ fault or RG3/Snyder’s fault for a lousy 2013 season, many of the pieces are pointing to the latter (it’s clear now that Mike Shanahan is lousy at drafting players especially on defense, Haz was bad, etc. so the story isn’t all one sided).
If Gruden out paces red-hot K.Shanahan, then it’s clear Gruden is no offensive play-calling dummy. And that would allow Snyder to save face on some of his past horrendous decisions. The Falcons going on to a significant season would be further proof that Gruden can beat a winning team and make his job even more secure, regardless of the rest of the season.
