Redskins launch OTAs today, Shanahan injured in collision with Garcon

RG3

The Washington Redskins kicked off 2012 Organized Team Activities today at Redskins Park. OTAs mark the countdown to the Redskins’ most anticipated training camp this century.

Robert Griffin III will lead first team offense against the second team defense, according to an online story this morning on The Insider. Kirk Cousins will lead the second team offense against the first team defense.

Rex Grossman must be on the field somewhere, but was no where mentioned in the story. It’s too soon to read anything into that. The coaches need to make assessments of their rookies right away. They just don’t need to study veterans like Grossman. There are plenty of Redskins fans, however, who would like to see Grossman as No. 3 on the quarterback depth chart.

The best news of the day was that DE Jarvis Jenkins worked through the defensive rotation “looking comfortable.” According to Brian Tinsman’s story on Redskins.com. Jenkins was having an eye-popping training camp before he tore his ACL and missed his entire rookie year.

There are questions about, if not outright holes in, Washington’s secondary. If Jenkins can make the pass rush better, as he is expected to do, weakness in the secondary can be masked.

Rain in the DC metro area led to the team’s first use of the new indoor practice bubble.

Jack you up, Coach Shanahan

Players are not in pads and they are not hitting at full speed. Good thing, too. Pierre Garcon and his defender collided with head coach Mike Shanahan at practice, according to tweets by sports writers on the scene.

Shanahan made a great defensive stop (!!!), but was shaken up on the play. I do hope he is alright.

Washington has scheduled OTA for today (May 21), May 23-24, May 29-31 and June 4-7. Minicamp will be held June 11-14.
